National Express - Rapide

The Rapide concept was first mooted in the early Seventies, but it was only when Trathens took advantage of deregulation of the coach roads that it was resurrected.
The idea was that a driver was legally allowed to drive four hours non-stop. The trouble was that people needed to answer the call of nature, so coaches stopped every couple of hours, and promptly lost another half-an-hour as the penny-spending was extended into visits to cafes, shops and so forth. That stop would rob you of around 40 miles down the road towards the passengers' destinations.
Put a toilet on board, add catering and you would be bring destinations that had previously been out-of-reach into your planning regime.
The remarkable feat was the development of the first Rapide coach, the Dennis Falcon V (as in 'Vee') Rapide coach.
Dennis' engineers have never been given the credit they were due for this vehicle, which took 16 months from first specification drawings by NBC's design engineers to the first chassis.
So why the Duple Super Goldiner body?
Rapide needed a high floor to make an impact of the market and on the road. The Super Goldliner met that. It was also another of the designs that the NBC engineers had been enthusiastic about.
But it was already dated. I never found out whether this was fact, but it was probably chosen because there was plenty of spare material in stock at Blackpool, and Duple was able to build quickly, because it had a shortage of orders that would eventually kill it off.
