The National Bus Company established five National Travel companies to exploit - or fail - as coach companies. It was a key role of the Central Activities Group to generate as much revenue as possible from the costly coach fleet it had inherited from the Tilling and BET groups.
It made some mistakes - National Charter and, indeed, the National Travel companies themselves. But it showed the way ahead for one product that had previously been treated as the poor cousin of tours and day trips: National Express long-distance coaching.
Given its head after deregulation in 1980 it established itself as the most successful company to emerge from NBC with worldwide interests and a FTSE 100 listing.
