The company was formed from the three coach-only operations among the National Bus Company's regional operations.
Black & White, Shamrock & Rambler and Greenslades kept their separate identities for some years. They were later joined by Wessex of Bristol, and by a small coaching unit established in South Wales.
They were eventually merged into the neighbouring bus operations because it was felt they could not sustain their separate administrative and maintenance facilities on their own.
But out of it came the mighty National Express, and also National Holidays. Those with a long memory will recall National Charter - but enough of that!
