Toilets, fast services, catering on-board, hostesses and stewards, and quality coaches were all important in bringing back passengers to the long-distance coach network.
But the key factors were a national image - which ended the colourful scenes in coach stations across Britain - interchanges close to motorways, and fixed frequency services, usually every hour.
That - and a grim determination by the management of National Express to succeed.
They did, and today the business they founded is a multi-billion pound business quoted on the FTSE 100, and known worldwide - not least in America where the company owns the second-biggest fleet of school buses.
There are around 1,500 photographs currently in my National Express, part of a ocllection of more than 33,000 transport pictures that I have made available for research and study, yes and enjoyment, on the internet. |
